The Houston Heights, one of the earliest planned communities in Texas, is located 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Downtown Houston. A National Geographic article says "stroll the area's broad, tree-canopied esplanades and side streets dotted with homes dating from the early 1900s and you may think you've landed in a small town." John Nova Lomax said that the Heights, which he describes as "Houston's own mini-Austin," had many "low-key" restaurants and beer gardens. The Houston Heights Association describes the Heights as being bounded by Interstate 10 on the south, North Shepherd Drive on the west, Interstate 610 on the north and both North Main and Studewood Streets on the east.

Montrose was originally envisioned as a planned community and streetcar suburb dating back to the early 20th century before the development of River Oaks. Developer J. W. Link and his Houston Land Corporation envisioned a "great residential addition" according to the neighborhood's original sales brochure. Link's planning details for the area included four wide boulevards with the best curbing and extensive landscaping. Link built his own home in Montrose, known as the Link-Lee Mansion, which is now part of the University of St. Thomas campus. A streetcar, the Montrose Line, ran through the neighborhood. Link wrote: "Houston has to grow. Montrose is going to lead the procession." It did, and the procession eventually continued far beyond the neighborhood. Montrose was first platted in 1911.

Early land history shows that on August 10, 1824, title to a league (4,428 acres) of land in Harris County, Texas was granted to a John D. Taylor. According to the March, 1826 census, Taylor was listed as “a farmer and stock raiser, aged between twenty-five and forty”.

Today this property is a quiet residential area consisting of approximately 80 acres of that original land grant composing two neighborhoods, Piney Point Estates and Shady Lane Estates. Each of these subdivisions off Shady Lane, close to Fondren and Westheimer, provides a lifestyle that is consistent with the new millennium.

West University is an area located on the southwestern edge of Houston’s central business district and just north of the Texas Medical Center. It is generally recognized as a combination The City of West University Place (established 1911) and several of its inner and surrounding subdivisions including Pemberton Place, Virginia Court, Belle Court, Monticello, Montclair, Colonial Terrace, College View, Sunset Terrace. The City of West University Place is actually a residential town within the confines of the City of Houston. West University (or even just ‘West U’) grew up with Rice University (founded 1912), and its academic charm and residential purity make it one of Houston’s most appealing neighborhoods. Professionals eager to plant family roots flock to settle in this small town with true community spirit.

Braes Heights is a neighborhood within the community of Braeswood Place, a home owners association founded in 1951. Braes Heights is a mainly single-family neighborhood inside Loop-610, east of the city of Bellaire, south of the cities of Southside Place and West University Place, west of the Texas Medical Center and the neighborhood of Old Braeswood, and north of Brays Bayou. The neighborhood was developed during the late 1940s into the1950s.

Afton Oaks subdivision is a welcoming oasis of oak tree canopies, wide smoothly resurfaced streets with antique-style street lamps, and sloping green lawns. Even in the grip of a Houston summer, the temperature seems to drop a few degrees within its borders – despite the fact that Afton Oaks is enviably located within Houston’s prestigious inner-Loop.

In 1922, Houston developer E.H. Fleming planned the residential and business community of Southampton Place to be built on 160.75 acres he had purchased from Nellie B. League of Galveston. The title to this land originated with the Obedience Smith survey that Smith received from the Republic of Texas on July 23, 1845. (This original land grant of 3,370 acres is now the greater part of central and southwest Houston.)
